    About Steve Uzzell

Having started in the photography business over 40 years ago as the assistant to the editor of National Geographic magazine and a member of their photographic staff, Steve Uzzell has continued his love of making images for national and international clients, and has garnered worldwide recognition and won numerous accolades, including ten prestigious Communication Artsawards.

As an inspirational speaker, his travels are also global — in just the past 15 years he has given the presentation that became his book Open Roads Open Minds – An Exploration of Creative Problem Solving to over 460 organizations in all 50 American states, as well as three Canadian provinces and five other countries, including India and China, to a combined audience of more than half a million people.

    Open Roads Open Minds

Using his striking photographs as illustrations of his metaphor about possibility and creativity, Steve inspires audiences to take advantage of his experience and vision to make any venture an adventure.

In any project he undertakes, Steve’s preparation lays the foundation for magic to happen. In words and images, he endorses Louis Pasteur’s belief that “Chance favors the prepared mind,” and his talk inspires the audience to apply this to their own lives and problem solving. “After all, our eyes will only ever see what our mind is prepared to comprehend.”.

    The Nature of Transition

We’ve all heard it, and we’ve all said it – about our organizations, about our workplace, about the economy, about our lives: “We are in such a state of transition.” But what does it mean to be in transition? What was it like when we weren’t in transition? When does it start? Does transition end? How do we know when we are finished? Should we fear it and avoid it, or look forward to it and embrace it?

In this talk, Steve explores the very nature of transition, visualized with his striking photographs. Viewing the subject from myriad perspectives – personal, daily, local, historical, architectural, global, and from the natural world – he also examines what he believes are the four fundamentals guiding us in transition: curiosity, passion, commitment and accountability.

    Testimonials

“Our crowd of 750 mostly middle-aged men would typically wait to be wowed by a keynote – sitting back in their chairs, arms crossed, territory marked, daring a speaker to impress them. In moments, our reps were open, eager (leaning forward!), smiling and taking notes in the dark. They were captivated by your pictures, alert to your words and responding to the way you were guiding them, considering how they could accomplish even more in their lives through preparation, asking the important questions and recognizing the moment when spontaneity collides with preparation.”
    – Stacy Baehman, Assistant Director of Marketing Communications, Woodbury Financial

In ISA’s 26 year history of conducting annual meetings, we have never had a 100% excellent rating until Steve Uzzell. Steve’s message, “preparation leads to magic,” and his delivery were exceptional. His presentation exceeded our expectations and sent us on an open road to enjoy life.”
    – Pamela J. Schmidt, Executive Director, ISA – The Association of Learning Providers
